Hey, everyone! This is Kitty, reporting from beautiful Greece, kind of surprised that we have signal all the way out here. For all I know, we don't, and the squirrels are just using the equipment as a front to come on the trip.

*chittering*

Oh, silly me, of course you wouldn't.

Anyway, in town, there wasn't much going on besides Gregorith dealing with the rain on the way to work.

Then on spring break, we're sailing around on yachts, but not without some time in Athens first. Sairis hit up the market, Caleb and I both hit up the Acropolis, while Rey and Flint ended up at Hadrian's Arch, talking about whether he's going to take over his boat. I mean, it's actually probably better than stealing a camel.

Then, time for yachts! Aboard the Hermes, Rey checked out her room, Girl Henry, uh, said hi to her roommate Sairis, and Steve told Tony he can't get their own yacht. That would not be in the spirit of the trip. And you can't get a boat unless you brought enough for the rest of the class.

On the Dionysus, Steph and Vi checked out the room, which isn't huge, and were cute about it, and Caleb hung out with a book.

And aboard the Poseidon, Flint was checking out the boat, I'm sure for absolutely no reason at all.

And that's all my notes. Off to slather on too much sunscreen and watch the squirrels stalk me as I check out ruins.

While everyone back in Fandom was getting yet another bout of cold weather, the folks in Athens were enjoying a beautiful first full day of vacation!

We start the morning with breakfast on the beach of Aegina, then exploring the Temple of Aphaia, a stunning artifact dating back to 500BC, before we set sail to our next stop: Ermioni. We'll back in the downwind breeze and indulge in refreshing swims with a relaxing lunch stop at that tiny unnamed island in the center of the map. In the afternoon, we'll explore the charming Ermioni town by the port and find a cool beach with clear blue waters. Jump in for a swim or chill under the shady trees. As the sun sets, we'll gather for an awesome evening with cocktails and dancing. Opa!

Watts and Steven had arrived at their hotel, unpacked, and then promptly headed out with a basket of cold drinks and snacks to spend some time on the beach. Which was literally right outside their door.

"Oh, this is perfect," Watts said with a contented sigh as he took in the view.

Thanks to the magic of portals, we arrive in Greece in the morning, giving us that time to explore Athens before we set sail after lunch. Head to the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel with ancient buildings and a Greece must-see, or get lost in the cobbled streets before heading to the marina. We set sail from our marina in the afternoon, heading to the ancient village of Aegina. Get to know your NPC crew as you spend the afternoon paddleboarding and swimming in crystal-clear water. In the evening, indulge in a Greek feast and drinks while bonding with your fellow sailors.

Gregorith didn't have a lot of experience with the rain. Such weather tended to be only found in specific people's paradises, or Cthulhu's realm. He supposed he might enjoy it more if it wasn't also chilly.

And if he hadn't stepped in a puddle, and realized he should have worn his boots after all.

He was a bit late for work because he'd opted to dash back home to change his socks.

But when all was said and done he was here, and relatively content. Which he suspected was the best a lot of mortals could hope for.

Fandom Radio - Saturday (2/21)

It's Sunday already? Wait... no it's Saturday. Why am I here? You know what, it's not important. Let's get this done and hope Lydia doesn't show up and realize she came all this way for nothing.

Ahem.

At the school we had Thor teaching about swords in Combat 101. Stark went with Greek style cupcakes in Cupcakes of the World. I'm guessing honey and pistachios were involved. And Steve and I taught about the struggles of getting a dog to take their medication in Overcoming Obstacles.

In town, Watts was dealing with everyone going into vacation mode at the Trooper Station. Steven was also there for lunch and to discuss their cat trying to get at food in their home.

And that's all we have. Hopefully everyone is prepared for vacation now. I should go finish packing... Have a good one!

Last chance to sign up! I'm putting the lists together this afternoon!

And since we no longer have high schoolers, let me update the policy I forgot about in the last posting: If you are taking or teaching a class, you are eligible to go! Guests are also invited.

"So, traveling with dogs is a whole thing," Steve said, "but it's necessary when your dogsitter tells you no."

"And, for their safety, its best they take medicine to sleep through the process," Tony added. "Stress and all."

All three dogs sat, waiting. Impatiently. There was peanut butter and cheese in their futures, they just knew it.

Steve grinned down at them. "Now they pay attention."

"The pills we're giving you aren't real, but they don't know that," Tony said. "So, we need you to successfully trick them to swallow one. Good luck."

“Next week, in a few days really,” Stark said, “we’ll be on the trip. Going to Greece. That’s here, on the map.” He pointed. “And the water next to it, of course. Because boats.”

“So this week, today, I thought we would try some Greek cupcakes. To get an idea of what foods there might be available. Though this particular cake is usually for New Years. It’s called Vasilopita, and I found a recipe that makes what would normally be a cake into cupcakes. The cake usually has a coin in it. No money in the cupcakes.”

That would be weird.

“So! Are you all going on the trip? Have any of you been to Greece before? Or on boats like these? I haven’t been on this type of boat that I remember. I wonder what the food will be like…but, we’re here for cupcakes. So I have ones you can all try, of course. And you can all try to make some as well. Let me know if you need help. Want help.”

Trooper Station, Friday

Another quiet day, as it seemed everyone was in 'vacation mode' already, from the raccoons right down to the Troopers themselves.

That none of the latter group were actually going on vacation was not the point, of course.

Combat 101, Friday Second Period

"Today," Thor proclaimed, "you will familiarize yourselves with swords. Now, I do not expect you to become masters of the blade within the confines of one semester, even if the entire semester was dedicated to the art, which it will not be." Swords were boring. Hammers were where it was at. "But the sword is a highly individualized weapon. What works for one person will not for another. So today you will experiment." Thor gestured to a rack of various handwavey swords. "Here we have an assortment of blades. Long, short, one-handers, two-handers. Some are meant for stabbing, others for slashing. Try them. Take your frustrations out on the practice dummies. We will discuss proper grip and form once you know which blade you will be using."

Good morning! It's Steve Rogers with all the news of yesterday.

In classes, Liliana finally got to talk about mana pairs and she was excited. Cara and Jane's class learned about beach blanket bingo, which sounds very wholesome, Don continues to hold out on us with prime Loki gossip, and Belle was researching non-Norse gods in the library.

In town, Thor was offering pre-vacation cocktails at the Devil's Nest, the Supper Club got an early start on Greek cuisine, and Duke is no longer an otter.

See you all at the Poralocity station on Sunday!

Belle was reading up on Greece.

Which, today, meant reading about Greek mythology. Except she kept getting distracted by other mythologies. Like, say, Norse. She was trying to resist researching the whole horse thing. So far she'd been successful. So far.

The gremlins were mysteriously absent today though they'd left behind evidence of what appeared to have been a feast either this morning or last night. They hadn't even shared. So rude.
my_own_advocate: (lucifer - healthy coping)
The whole Duke-as-an-otter thing had been cute, and then annoying-slash-concerning, and then singing day had happened and now Lucifer was just over it all.

Which would explain why, by the time even the faintest hint of dusk hit the air, he was already on the deck of the Rouge with a bottle of red wine and a distinctly grumpy expression. He glared at the horizon, and then at his wine, and then drank some more.

All right, he did, at times, spare a glance for the door. The last thing they needed tonight was for the otter to escape again.

Lydia would not be participating in the school's upcoming trip. That sounded like entirely too much of boats for her nerves, thank you very much. Still, she could enjoy the food of Greece, and help everyone else get into the spirit, she had decided, and thus had selected a Greek restaurant in Baltimore for tonight's supper club. She hoped everyone wouldn't get too sick of delicious pita and such by the end of next week.

Welcome to Supper Club, everyone!
ifwebeworthy: (Thor can mix a drink)
Thor was already half on vacation, which was why he was not asking questions about whatever Tiny was up to at the other end of the bar.

He was, however, threatening him with the seltzer gun every time it looked like he might break out into song. That whole nonsense was over. There was no need to go around singing of one's own free will.

The Devil's Nest is open!
ifwebeworthy: (Don is serious)
"This week is also not the week you get to learn about why Loki's kids are like that," Don told his class, apologetic, "because we're covering something a bit more basic first. You'll have to remain in suspense for another...two weeks, actually. Today we're going to talk about the world. Or, more accurately, the worlds. Nine of them, hanging on a tree.

"The Norse believed that at the heart of the universe there was a massive ash tree, Yggdrasil. Creatures lived within the tree itself--a squirrel, a hawk, several stags, a dragon...you know, your usual forest creatures that you might find living in a tree." Note sarcasm. "Amongst the branches of Yggdrasil are nine worlds: Asgard, the realm of the Aesir; Vanaheim, the realm of the Vanir; Alfheim and Svartalfheim, the realms of the light and dark elves; Jotunheim and Muspelheim, the realms of the frost and fire giants; Nidavellir, the realm of the dwarves; and Niflheim, the primordial realm of ice and water. Sometimes instead of Niflheim, Hel is one of the worlds on the tree, depending on who you ask. And, of course, Midgard, the realm of men, the one we are standing in. Sort of. I don't really know how interdimensional nexus points work. In theory, one can access the other worlds by traveling out of their world and along the tree, but that way is roundabout, so most entities that can traverse worlds do so by other means, such as the rainbow bridge known as the Bifrost, which allows the Aesir to travel between Asgard and Midgard.

"So," Don said. "What do you think? Is the universe a tree? If you don't buy into it, what might have made the Norse conceptualize the world this way? Why do both a squirrel and a dragon live in the tree? Discuss."
wrongkindofsith: (At least one of us has a clue)
The classroom had beach blankets set up for the movie this week. Because of course it did. What was Fandom without the whimsy?

"So, despite the weather here, we decided to go with a summer movie this time," Jane said.

"To get you in the mood for break," Cara added. "Since it will apparently be warmer there."

"Its not about Greece, sadly." That would have been helpful. "Instead we have... beach blanket bingo?"

'We're relatively sure it's suitable to watch." For certain definitions of suitable.
wrongkindofsith: (Like some kind of note-taking ninja)
No, nothing happened to me on Tuesday.

*chittering*

Nothing at all.

Up at the School, the Long Con was about watching your watches, Creative Writing wanted to know people's Spring Break plans, and Glitter! made cupcakes. Arden had safety snacks in the Library, which she possibly shared with Caleb and Gray

The Dorms continued to be quiet, while in Town, Gray wouldn't start at Over Easy until he was sure there'd be no singing, while Adrian was 'grumpy' at Pick Your Poison, at least until Rey showed up and he was mysteriously not so grumpy.

Finally! As much as Liliana adored talking about mana philosophies, she was also quite excited to finally get to move into teaching new material: mana pairs. Today, when class entered the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves high up on a rooftop in a bustling city. No, not Ravnica (but great guess!), Insomnia. Rather than pillows and cushions, there were scattered tables and chairs set up under a string of the so-called 'fairy lights' (they had nothing to do with faeries at all, Liliana had checked), though the omnipresent whiteboard was, once again, omnipresent. Drawn on it were five different symbols in a circle: a sun, a droplet, a skull, a flame, and a tree.

Wealth is power--and you can ABSOLUTELY take it with you--Orzhov Syndicate )

The corner of her lips curled a bit. "But before you decide that black and white mana is bad guys all the way down, there are a number of positive qualities that go along with this pairing. The first is unwavering discipline, the result of black's determination to succeed and white's absolute dedication to a cause. Relating to the shared patience I mentioned earlier, black and white demonstrate excellent stewardship, with a focus on long-term planning and incremental gain. Sure, strip mining an area bare of all its resources makes for fast profit, but that profit will eventually come to an end. Better to take care and ensure that your profit lasts forever. This relates to their shared concept of orderly self-interest. While black and white philosophy cares primarily - if not solely - for their in-group, they are aware that a rigid, organized, orderly system benefits everyone. The tide raises all boats, after all. And, of course, loyalty and devotion have already been mentioned, but deserve to be acknowledged again."
