Auburn, Kentucky: Monday Morning

Dean sat in a corner booth at Earl’s Kountry Cafe, quietly eating his breakfast. The place had that familiar, worn-in feel—faded yellow walls, a few crooked pictures of horses, and cracked vinyl seats that had seen better days. The coffee was hot and bitter, the kind you drank more out of habit than for any real enjoyment. But it was quiet, and that was enough for now.

He stared down at his half-empty mug, idly swirling the dark liquid. When he’d started this road trip, he’d hoped it would be a chance to reconnect with Sam and dive back into hunting. But after helping Krissy and Jo, something had shifted. The last few hunts had been rough—not just physically, but mentally. The grind, the road—it was wearing on him in a way it hadn’t before.

Home. The thought had been creeping up on him more and more. The Island wasn’t just some random place or a mission anymore. The people there were good. Well, mostly good. And there were people who didn’t expect him to be anything other than himself. It was a weird feeling, having that kind of support, but it was also... nice.

Dean leaned back in the booth, letting out a sigh. He had one more stop before heading back—picking up some barbecue from that place in North Carolina for Arden’s surprise party. The thought of the party, of seeing everyone again, seeing Jane again… It brought comfort.

The bell over the diner door chimed, but Dean didn’t bother to look up. His mind was already miles away, thinking about Fandom. The thought of going back wasn’t just some fleeting idea anymore. It was something he actually wanted.

Dean downed the rest of his coffee and set the mug on the table. Yeah, he still had one more stop to make, but after that? He was heading home. And for the first time in a long time, the idea of going home didn’t feel abstract. It wasn’t the bunker. It wasn’t a roadside stop where he and Sam would bicker about what to watch on TV.

He tossed a few bills on the table, nodded to the waitress, and stepped out into the cool Kentucky air. The road still called to him, but this time, it was leading him back to the island.

That made Jane smile at least. Even with the weird situation with the classes that needed to be cleared up.

The moose would not be budged, but she would still try!

Still off the coast of Maryland. I've been told I can't make any comments about it being quiet, though.

Jinxing the whole damn island, Jane.

Yourself without any punctures would be nice.

And she didn't even know about the ridiculous, rusty death!

I wouldn't turn down food if you wanted to come by my place to lay around in bed.

Ah, peak relationship goals for their age.

I will rescue you from being a responsible adult, she texted back, grinning to herself. Need me to pick up anything to help?

Sometimes you just had to say things out loud! Though maybe if he had a dog with him, it would look less weird.

Stay safe, alright?
